LA BOHEME (Puccini)
24, 25, 28 July 2009
''They meet, they fall in love, they split, she
returns, she dies''! (That's tenor Rolando Villazón's ten-second
plot summary of Puccini's La Bohème!)
NDO’s choice this year is one
that has stayed at the top of the opera repertoire for the past 100 years.
This is a tale that tugs at the heart-strings with Puccini’s gorgeous
melodies and, through its timeless story of love, laughter and despair.
The wonderful orchestral score will again be in the hands of NDO’s
nineteen musicians under the baton of conductor Dr
Paul Foster. The Director
is Martyn Harrison and the cast of young Bohemians is international:
• Coloratura soprano, Michaela
Bloom, from Melbourne Australia, sings the fragile Mimi.
South African, Arthur
Swan, from Cape Town Opera is her
lover, the jealous poet Rodolpho.
• Delightful Belinda Evans whom many of you may have
seen recently as a finalist in the BBC’s “How
Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?”, or in Kenneth
Branagh’s film adaptation of Mozart’s “The
Magic Flute” is the coquettish Musetta.
Mimi: Michaela Bloom
Musetta: Belinda Evans
Rodolpho: Arthur Swan
Marcello: Jeremy Vinogradov
Schaunard: Marcin Kopec

NEW DEVON OPERA SINGERS A ‘HIT’ AT
PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS CEREMONY IN LONDON
Devon’s own professional opera company was delighted
to be asked by Tomorrow’s People to provide the entertainment
for the charity’s prestigious national Awards Ceremony
in London on 12 November 2008 at Plaisterers’ Hall.
Two NDO’ opera singers entranced the audience with
a selection of well-known opera arias and duets. Soprano
Debra Morley, who was a smash hit in NDO’s 2008 summer
touring production of “Rigoletto” delighted the
several hundred strong audience with a sparkling aria from “La
Traviata” and tenor James
Heath thrilled everyone with
his performance of “La donne è mobile”.
Their cabaret concluded with two wonderful love duets from
Lehar’s “The Merry Widow” and Puccini’s “La
Bohème”. The excellent and sympathetic accompanist
was Anthony Legge, Director of Opera at the Royal Academy
of Music.
Linda Hughes, Chairman of New
Devon Opera said:
“We are so proud to have been invited to support the
wonderful charity “Tomorrow’s People” at
their annual Awards Ceremony and, to have been present when
two Devon groups won awards.*
Debra was also one of the international
opera singers chosen by our world-famous Patron, Argentinian
superstar José Cura
to participate in NDO’s JOSÉ CURA
OPERA PROJECT 2008. The project (which took place in for a week in September
in London and Plymouth) gave a group of singers the benefit
of world-class tuition in operatic performance skills.”
